Greensburg Anew - Coming 2026
On the evening of May 4, 2007, a devastating tornado struck the small town of Greensburg, Kansas. Twelve lives were lost, and ninety-five percent of the town was destroyed.
The Swedish Photographer Susanne Walström first visited and documented Greensburg in 1993, when it was a quiet Midwestern town, far from the world’s breaking news. What were the odds that this very place would, fourteen years later, become a disaster zone?
Now, more than thirty years after her first visit and eighteen years after the tornado, she returns to trace the town’s transformation. Will she meet someone from her old photographs? How did the city decide to rebuild in a climate-smart way and become one of the greenest in the United States? And what is it like to keep living in the so-called Tornado Alley, where powerful storms and new tornadoes strike year after year?
Greensburg Anew is a documentary about time, loss, and the human drive to rebuild. In an era when the world is shaken by one crisis after another, the question of resilience and the ability to begin again has never felt more urgent. The story of Greensburg reaches far beyond this small American town
